Figma + OpenAI: Partnership
I kept waiting for Figma to address the one question designers have…
They never did.
I’ve been following Ai integration in design and its role in creativity for a while.
Difficult not to.
Not only because it’s a major debate in the industry, but it directly affects my design background.
I was reading articles from Figma, one specifically talking about what “good design” means with Ai
Quickly, I started noticing they kept focusing on practical usage.
The surprising aspect is the article just ends there.
Why?
Maybe this is part of a larger story that Figma is telling?
Pragmatic tools to assist designers with workflow.
I’ve seen similar patterns from other articles.
A recent article focused heavily on collaboration with AI.
The more I read, the more I noticed the same pattern:
new features
new workflows
new partnerships.
It’s not always what the article is talking about that intrigues me, but it’s what they are leaving out.
They're not really selling Ai.
Not talking about creative authorship at all.
The tension isn’t about ai changing design,
it’s whether it changes what it means to be a designer.
Maybe the biggest challenge Ai presents in design isn’t even technical…
but an existential one.
I suspect many designers are quietly asking,
as AI becomes more integrated in the design...
how much of the joy of the design process is left to the designer?
Can designers redefine themselves while the profession is being negotiated?
Any profession that is integrating Ai will eventually have to renegotiate its identity.
